The Montreal Protocol – 2010 Refrigeration Phase Out

The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of a number of substances believed to be responsible for ozone depletion.

The protocol was entered into force on January 1, 1989 and it is believed if the protocol is followed, the ozone layer will fully recover by 2050. As of January 2010, products using Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) based refrigerants, commonly used in temperature control equipment, can no longer be manufactured. However, products that were built prior to January 1, 2010 can be serviced using CFC based refrigerants until 2020.
